Hecate? That name definitely pops up on Earth, usually attributed to a dark goddess figure. You have any more information about her?

[ Well, maybe that would have been the responsible thing to do: learn more about this woman that she might be entrusting Luz's magical education to.

She certainly did not do that. ]

Uh... Met her at that party. She's new. [ And that's honestly all she remembers. ] Well, if she's bad, you can just not learn from her.

Oh, and you gotta show her what you can do. Put on that magic show we talking about.

Do YOU think she's good, from what you've seen of her so far?

You mean I have to audition like I did for Principal Bump?!

Uh, yeah. Yeah, she seemed good. [ Oh, right! Hecate made her a gem.

She reaches back and rifles around in her hair, pulling a large, red gem out. It's sort of shiny, but not perfect. She holds it up to Luz. ] Made me this. Pretty nice, huh?

Yeah, yeah, like that. But you're better now. It's gonna be great.

Aw, that was nice of her! Pretty too!

You know, that's true! I only knew two spells when I tried to get into Hexside, now I know four and I can combine them too!

Plus...I think I might have accidentally been calling forth energy at the beach.

[owllady]

Yeah, yeah, exactly.

[ Eda squints at her. ] Were you? How'd you do that?

[ After a moment, Eda leans back against the wall, crossing her arms ] Who knows how long we're gonna be here. You got more magic in you, and maybe this lady can help you get to it. You got potential. [ And Eda doesn't want to be the reason that Luz wastes it ]

We-ll, there was all this smoke and music, and I think the both of them together had me just moving and dancing, but, like, all night! I mean, ALL night into the morning. But while I was doing that, I could feel all this power building up around me, and so I used it to dance, but I could feel it, that I could do more if I concentrated it, you know? It was like when we were meditating, but hyped up.

If you think she's ok, I'll give it a try? What's the worse that could happen, other than her saying she wasted her time with my audition and that I'm squandering my gift and...wait, am I trying to talk myself out of this?

[owllady]

Huh. You're pretty connected to this place. [ Eda needs to take more time to think about that. She watches Luz for a moment, then shrugs. ] You do anything cool with it?

I'm not gonna make you do it. Thought you'd want to, but if you don't, I'll tell her that we don't need a teacher here.

If you do, and she's awful, I'll tell her to get outta our house.

Not yet. The whole "waking up in a dark abandoned hotel" thing really made me forget, plus I almost fell off a Ferris Wheel. I want to try it again, in a better situation.

No, I do! I'm just nervous. I've never met a fully recognized witch here other than you, Ly and Luna, so I'm just trying to prepare myself.

Sounds like fun. [ Eda laughs a little. She spent her time at the beach relaxing. Nothing nearly as wild as that. ]

Don't sweat it, kiddo. She didn't seem that scary. [ Well, with the ball magic and all. She did remind Eda of Lilith a little too much, but, hey. Eda used to like Lilith. A very long time ago. ]

Alright. But I'm serious. I'll clock her if you need me to. [ She winks at Luz. ]

Oh, ok! In that case, I won't worry, but I will definitely try to impress, if I can!

[Maybe tone down the theatrics though? With Bump it had been different because humans were so rare, but she was betting that being a human would not be so rare with most other people, if Deerington Sleepers were their basis].

I'm sure it'll be fine! I mean, you wound up striking conversation and finding that out about each other, she's probably as amazing as you are, right?

[That Eda had met Hecate before Luna certainly made things fortuitous].

You don't even have to try. [ Eda gives her one of those softer smiles, the ones that Luz gets out of her more than anyone else. ] Heh, yeah, but it was at that weird party. Dunno what happened that night, it's all kinda blurry.

Trust me, if it was blurry for YOU, imagine dancing all night into the morning. The music was probably still pounding in my head the next day. It didn't help that I really enjoyed the heck out of it but lost my razor sharp focus on beating the hotel. Then the ballroom happened and, well, I can't say no to dances, apparently.

[She raised an eyebrow] So how'd you two meet anyway?

[owllady]

Heh, yeah. It really didn't give you a chance, did it. Well, bet those kids would still help ya. Lots of 'em are looking into this stuff.

[ Eda narrows her eyes, trying to remember. ] Huh. Dunno. Saw her, asked her to dance, I think? Something in the air, I guess.

The kids here are definitely all really different. I mean, it's pretty hard to even pin any of them down.

[She says even after seeing some of them totally drunk].

"Something in the air?" Welp, that's definitely not totally a lot to go on, so I guess I'll just have to see what she's like!

[owllady]

Yeah? I don't think I wanna know what your human kids were like. They sound awful.

Guess we will! [ 'Cause Eda did not check! At all! ]

They're not! I mean, in my world they're more freaked out by me, but the ones here are pretty nice! The ones I've met, anyway.

[owllady]

Why would they be freaked out by you? [ Eda raises an eyebrow at her. ] Yeah, yeah, the kids here are fine. [ "Fine" is a true understatement ]

You know. I'm weird and overly enthusiastic. It's kind of how I wound up in your world to begin with.

I like them! They're all pretty fun! I mean, the ones I've met anyway.

[owllady]

Well, yeah. You are. That's Luz. [ Eda laughs, shaking her head. ] We'll see if this teacher can handle you, huh?

She sighs, pushing off the wall ] Alright, kiddo. Get your glyphs ready.

Will do! Still can't believe my grumpy mentor managed to strike up a conversation with a fellow witch all on her own! I think my ways are growing on you!

Who you callin' grumpy? [ She's not actually mad about it, and laughs, waving a hand. ] Who knows, maybe I'll be popular next you know it.
