[He's always enjoyed the idea of being able to fly. All his best dreams involved flying!]

[Luz grinned. This was at least something she knew she could help with].

All right then. We'll clean up here and then I'll get us ready with the staff. We can have a cool flight all around Trench!

Cool! [This is going to be a very good afternoon, yessir. Fern is pretty excited, though he does soften a little.] Uh, thanks for this. The help and the flight and everything.

[They could do a lot, and Luz would just have to think of some of the places they had available]!

Oh, well of course! It's not often you get to be a different part of you! Besides, if anything, just think of this as me fixing my mistakes from last time.

[She's got this!! Though when she mentions last time he looks a little awkward. Guilty, really, because he's never going to stop feeling guilty about that.]

H... ha ha, right. That was all on me, not you. You don't have any mistakes you gotta fix.

[Luz took his hand].

Fern. You were going through some stuff. That was obvious. But I feel like I wasn't seeing what was happening to you, and I could have helped more. I don't want to mess up like that again.

[When Luz takes his hand he glances down, feeling a little reassured by the contact.

A little. Feeling skin against skin instead of skin against grass is a weird sensation, and he isn't sure how he feels about that.]

I... thanks. You're not messing up this time. And uh, if I'm feeling weird, I'll actually tell you instead of just freaking out, okay?

[Luz wasn't even thinking of that just yet, with the skin contact, and was more concentrated on his words, which meant a lot to her].

Thanks, Fern. Just...be honest with me, is all I ask. I'll do my best to try to understand and help you. I mean it.

[He gives her a small, awkward shrug in return, finding that after a moment he needs to tug his hand back. It's weird, it's too weird.]

Sure. Then uh, in the interest of honesty - [He holds his hand up, frowning.] - I'm not gonna lie, touching people when I have skin feels - weird, now.

Oh, it is?

[Luz pulled her hand back]. Now that I think about it, that makes sense. It just didn't occur to me. Ok! No touchie until you're back to you then.

So now that we got that straight, what human thing DO you want to do?

Th - thanks.

[He's grateful, though it doesn't feel right that he has to request this. It feels... wrong, and it puts a damper on all of this.]

Um, I think just doing some cooking's good.

[Luz wasn't going to question it. For Fern, it was just how he felt about it, and she'd let it be unless he said otherwise].

Ok! Find anything you like so far, or do you want to try and make something you never had before?

[He appreciates it. This is such a sensitive situation that he feels a little bad for just not... being comfortable with himself, but it is what it is.]

I think anything you wanna make will be fun.

[Luz knew better that Fern was still trying to sort through these feelings he was having about being human in the first place. It was a hard situation].

Well, we can do arroz con pollo, rice and chicken, if you want a challenge! We just have to make sure we have all the ingredients. Hmm. Rice. Garlic. Oregano. I saved some chicken stock in the freezer...aw crud! Do we have any tomatoes?

[laminae]

[Oh, rice and chicken, that sounds okay! He probably can't screw that up, right?]

I can grow s - uh. [Well, no. He isn't grass anymore, that puts a damper on the whole growing plant life thing. He frowns, looking down at his hand, then slumps a little.]

I... think we might have some in the fridge?

[He'll go over to it, opening it up and... they do not.]

Aww, no way. Really? Hmm. Tomatoes would have really helped.

We COULD substitute if we have bell peppers! Do we have any of those?

[laminae]

[He gives a small, disheartened shrug.]

Uh, lemmie see... [He'll check the fridge again, and pull out a red bell pepper this time.] Would this work?

((OOC: In the interest of time, we'll skip going through getting each and every ingredient lol))

Great! I got the flour, the chicken, the salt, garlic, pepper, paprika and all that other stuff! Why don't you start by putting the oil in the pot and heating it up, and I'll start the dredging?

((Sure!))

[Fern is looking at all these ingredients, a bit daunted, but nods and takes up the oil and the pot.]

Okay, sure. [He'll go do that, getting the stove on and putting some of the oil into the pot.]

Luz was already getting started on adding all the ingredients, showing Fern how to mix them all together and using the right amount so that the food was going to go in the pot and when. She then gave the chicken a good cook before turning to Fern].

Care to dice up the chicken for me, Fern?

[Thankfully, it does seem like a pretty easy recipe. Even one that Fern might be able to do on his own someday! So working with Luz is a pretty fun time, even he can't shake the uncomfortableness that's coming with being human and fleshy.

And when it comes time to cut up the chicken, he perks right up.]

Heck yeah I can! [He scoops up a sharp knife, spinning it in his hand.] Lemmie at it!

[Luz grinned, then showed him how to mix the rice in with the onion and garlic, to add in the broth and tomato and then nestle the cooked chicken atop the rice].

Didn't you and Jake cook a lot together? This is something I had to learn with my mom, once dad was gone. Sometimes I'd have to make it if she came home late.

[This is a pretty good recipe! Hopefully the rest of the house will appreciate it - probably, since it isn't a total disaster.]

Um, sometimes, yeah. [It feels a little awkward talking about Jake, given Jake never actually liked him.] ... What happened with your dad?

Shh I have NO IDEA where Luz's dad is, its not been canonically told to us yet!

[Luz was on hand to make sure it wasn't a disaster! That was at least what was good about watching her mom: she had a good idea about what she had to do so things didn't go wrong]!

Ok.

[Did she strike a nerve there]?

Not around anymore. It's just me and mom

[That DID strike a nerve for Luz, sadly. She did wish he was around, but that just wasn't the case anymore].

[Fern pauses, realizing the shift her in tone, and immediately knows to back off. It's fine, he gets it.]

Oh. Uh, sorry. [He shifts his weight from one foot to the other.] Dad stuff is complicated for me, too.
